Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie, Bali

Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie, Bali

Have I mentioned before that I’m the type of person who eats dessert for lunch? I know it sounds weird but I obviously don’t mind just eating cakes instead of heavy meal. So this afternoon I visited Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie (the name reminds me of TWG Tea Salon) in Kerobokan area. The place was rather empty with only one group of ang mohs having brunch. After I had seated, a staff handed me a menu book and informed me that hot meals and some beverage menus were not available due to the blackout (yes they’re having power failure that time, no wonder it felt so hot as the place was supposed to be aircon-ed)!. That being said, I could only order their cakes and cold beverages like iced teas and mojitos. Oh well, I was disappointed but it wouldn’t be nice to leave – I thought it would be offensive to them lol.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b052b06Anyway, the place still looks pretty despite the blackout (luckily I came on the daytime, otherwise I would not be able to appreciate the beautiful interior in the dark right?). I sat right next to the window – enough to make me feel like staying in an old English house in the countryside haha. I adore the Parisian-style decor with turquoise pastel color – it looks so chic and enchanting.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b47The outdoor area looks narrow but Instagrammable

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b122b28Ice Tea – IDR20,000
I wanted to have a cup of hot cappuccino or latte to go with the cakes but since hot drinks were not available, I got myself a glass of iced tea instead. The drink was forgettable but the presentation looked chio haha.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b35photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b142b10Nutella Croissant – IDR18,000
From the bread selection, my pick went to this Nutella croissant. The croissant itself has several variants like almond, Nutella, green tea and salted egg yolk. I wanted to have the salted egg one, but for the second time I was made disappointed for not being able to order it as they would need a microwave to re-heat the croissant. Okay fine. Even though it was not served warm, the croissant was still enjoyable. Besides having flaky skin, the texture was soft and slightly chewy. The Nutella filling was generous as well albeit not flowy as I thought it would be.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b56Green Tea Eclair – IDR32,000
Besides Nutella croissant, I got myself a piece of green tea eclair too because why didn't I indulge myself with the best of both worlds (I'm talking about Nutella and green tea here)? The choux was a tad dry for my liking. The green tea filling was clotted when I cut the choux but nevertheless it was delicious and it had a delightful green tea scent.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b082b50It was a good tai tai time spent at Angelita, although it would be much better if there wasn't any blackout haha. It was so awkward without any background music – the place was so quiet that even the staffs talked to each other whispering lol). The desserts were all good, if only they were not that pricey. I felt heavy-hearted paying 15% tax and service charge for two small cakes and a glass of iced tea *sobs*. But overall, I would recommend this place to visit when you are in Bali. Indulge in the princessy atmosphere and get your camera ready all the time as every corner is worth an Instagram post. FYI, they also have afternoon tea package on weekends (yup, it's available on weekends only – what’s the point of calling themselves a tea salon then haha).

Calibre Coffee Roasters, Surabaya

Calibre Coffee Roasters, Surabaya

Today I drove my mom to a coffee shop near my house called Calibre Coffee Roasters (actually it’s not so near la, given the fact that I still needed to drive haha). Frankly speaking, this was one of those rare occasions that I went to a cafe with my mom. Normally, I would go with my close friends or cousins since we’re already clicked – thus, we could spend a few hours together without looking awkward.

This cafe is strategically located in the heart of Surabaya and majority of its patrons are youngsters. There are indoor and outdoor areas – outdoor area is suitable for smokers. Calibre occupies the space of a colonial-style house, whereby the front part has been converted into a hipster-looking cafe.

These hanging lightbulbs add more hipster feeling to the cafe.

When I saw some seats upon the windowsill that had a view to the main road, I immediately ‘chope’ them before proceeding to the counter for ordering process. Taking a glance at their menu board, there are not many options of heavy meal, but the usual cafe fares like sandwiches, salad, French toast, pasta, and cakes on display are available.

calibreShaken Iced Tea – IDR20,000
Not just ordinary iced tea, it was shaken iced tea (hence the frothy surface). My mom didn’t expect it to be that plain, she thought that some sugar had been added beforehand haha.

Caffe Latte – IDR30,000
A trip to a hipster coffee shop is not complete without getting a dose of caffeine to sip. The latte art looks kinda vague. I took my first sip and it was pleasant. It carried a good ratio between acidity and milkiness. However, my mom complained that it’s too acidic for her liking, as she had been accustomed to drinking instant milk coffee lol. Therefore, when a cup of freshly-roasted coffee was given to her, she was surprised of its acidity. I’m no coffee connoisseur, but I think it is safe to say that my latte was enjoyable.

Spicy Beef Bacon Penne in Tomato Cream Sauce – IDR55,000
I shared this pasta with mom since we were both too full to get each of us a main course. I was underestimating their food – I initially thought that cafe food would be mediocre. But when they said it’s spicy, they really meant it. The spiciness was no joke for a non-spicy eater like me, but mom said it tasted fine.

Choco Oreo Mille Crepes – IDR35,000
This mille crepe was supplied by Lareia, I suppose? It had super soft texture, chocolatey taste and sweet Oreo finish. Definitely no regret paying IDR35,000 for this!

Was it awkward to actually spend time in a coffee shop with mom? Not really, she could be a pretty good photographer and we could chat about random stuffs while consuming the food haha. Sitting next to the big window glass is really helpful to add natural lighting to my photos. Furthermore, it’s an enjoyment for me to see what’s happening on the road outside and do people-watching. The atmosphere is homey and laid-back with some blues and jazz tunes playing in the background. The service was okay, although I felt that the counter staffs could deliver more eye contact to customers. Cafe hoppers, do give this place a try!

Djati Lounge, Malang

Djati Lounge, Malang

Looking for a relaxing place to escape from the lively city scene? Make your way to the city of Malang and unwind yourself at Djati Lounge. Djati Lounge is situated in The Araya, an upscale housing estate in Malang. The exact location is quite far from Araya’s main gate (where Plaza Araya is located) and there doesn’t seem to be adequate signboard, so you may need to arm yourself with GPS or Google Maps haha.

Djati Lounge offers an unbeatable day view of lush golf range and pool. It also looks serene and romantic at night!

Photo 3-26-17, 14 16 58
The dining area here is pretty big. There are indoor and semi-outdoor areas on both first and second floors. My favorite part is the semi-outdoor area on the first floor – the sofas are just too comfy that I want to chill there all day haha.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 09 26Iced Strawberry Mint Tea – IDR30,000
Not sure if they freshly brewed the tea, but this drink was pleasant. The mint gave a cooling sensation and there was sourish flavor from the strawberry too.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 09 14Taro ‘Tahwa’ – IDR35,000
The taro frappe supposedly came with silky beancurd, but we were informed that the beancurd was out of stock so they changed it to grass jelly. The drink was milky and the taro taste was distinctive.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 12 26Choco Marshmallow – IDR35,000
It was just the usual iced chocolate with two marshmallows on top. The chocolate flavor was velvety and not too bitter, I liked it.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 13 40Cheese Fritter – IDR35,000
It was a good snack to munch. The fritters were stuffed with piping hot cheese that melted as I tore it in two.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 13 44Crispy Mushroom – IDR25,000
It was okay, but it would be better if the fried mushroom was accompanied with mayonnaise instead of ‘petis’, although it might be purposely done to bring out a true Indonesian taste. The batter was a bit too thick for me though.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 16 42Sitting Scallop  IDR60,000
The scallop sits on a small piece of bread, finished with BBQ sauce garnish. I don’t like scallop so I cannot comment on this haha. Anyway, thumbs up for the good-looking presentation.

Cheese Sticks – IDR30,000
The concept of this dish is similar to churros, with puff pastry sticks substituting the doughnuts. Coming with chocolate dipping sauce, it turned out pedestrian to me.

Overall, I had a pleasant time with my family here – the food, service, and atmosphere were all good. Once you are seated here, you wouldn’t want to leave. The price range is a bit on the steep side for Malang standard, but trust me, it’s worth every Rupiah. The place is family-friendly – they have a playroom to keep your kids occupied. Additionally, if you come from outside Malang, there is Djoglo Luxury Bungalow available for rent, which is just beside Djati Lounge.

The Fat Turtle, Bali

The Fat Turtle, Bali

The Fat Turtle is a small cafe that serves all day breakfast, desserts and coffee. It is located on Jl. Petitenget next to Deus ex Machina shop and opposite Potato Head Beach Club main gate. When I visited this cafe, 90% of the guests were foreigners – suddenly I felt like I was somewhere in Australia haha.

img_1197
The atmosphere was very laid-back. The sofa where I sat on was plied with coffee bean sack and I love how they converted a sewing table to a dining table.

img_1199
img_1200
Mocha – IDR28,000

Sadly enough, my hot mocha wasn’t very pleasant despite the beautifully crafted latte art. The caffeine wasn’t kicking enough and the chocolate flavor was faint.

img_1201
img_1203-1Red Velvet Pancakes – IDR55,000
The Fat Turtle cafe is famous for its red velvet pancakes so I made sure to try it on my visit. I understood why. Major love for the pancakes! They were super fluffy and the cream cheese was not overly cheesy, just the way I liked it. There were only 4 pieces honeycomb but dayum I was a fan – they kinda reminded me of Garrett’s caramel popcorn. The vanilla ice cream and the chocolate soil created a perfect match together. Not just delicious, the presentation was a winner too, although the cream cheese slipped off the pancake when it was served haha. To my surprise, triple stack of pancake was more than enough to refuel my tummy.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time here. The pancake was just too good and I would definitely come back for it! If you are a sucker for pancake, The Fat Turtle is a place you simply cannot miss when you are in Bali.

Cloud Cakes, Bali

Cloud Cakes, Bali

If Bangkok has a unicorn cafe, Bali has one too! In Level 21 Mall, there is a cafe called Cloud Cakes that will help channeling the girly side in you. Decorated with white and pastel pink colors, it’s definitely irresistible for every girl (including me!) not to take pictures here. I could not help but repeating the word ‘cute’ throughout my stay.

Photo 12-13-16, 17 59 48Judging from the name ‘Cloud Cakes’, you are right to guess that this cafe sells sweet stuff. Besides, it also has a few kinds of savory food like rainbow spaghetti (yes, you read it right, the spaghetti here does look colorful) and sandwiches.

Photo 12-13-16, 18 12 13Thai Milk Tea Bobba – IDR25,000
The drink was served inside a ‘light bulb’ and adorned with cotton candy on top. Cotton candy made everything prettier indeed, but to be honest its stickiness really bothered me. The Thai tea was actually good, but the pearl given was too little!

Photo 12-13-16, 18 05 52Left: The Simpsons – IDR6,500
Doesn’t the donut remind you of The Simpsons movie? Taste-wise, it’s just okay – not fantastic but I’m not complaining either.

Right: Panda Pie – IDR6,500
I didn’t get why it was named pie when it looked more like donut with vanilla glaze and Oreo garnish haha. If you are a fan of Oreo, this one is made for you.

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, Singapore

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, Singapore

Finally, I got a chance to visit Hello Kitty Orchid Garden at Changi Airport. I was really excited to try this place as I’d never been to any Hello Kitty Cafe before, not even the one in Jakarta. Hello Kitty Orchid Garden opens 24 hours a day and it’s located in public area so non-travelers also get access to this place.

Actually my visit to this cafe was very long overdue, considering it had been around since mid-2016. Thus, the long queue was nowhere in sight since the craze had faded. Couldn’t be more thankful for it, coz you know, Singaporeans go crazy when it comes to Hello Kitty (remember how people would queue all night long in front of McDonald’s for Hello Kitty toys?).

photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b552b30You can take pictures with is this giant figurine near the entrance. The Kitty was wearing two ribbons haha!

photo2b2-23-17252c2b162b372b10photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b532b07I had been told about the mediocre-yet-overpriced food at Hello Kitty Cafe, however, it didn’t deter me from trying. I’m neither a fan of Hello Kitty nor pink color, but still, this cafe looks so cute and Instagenic to me. Just like the name, this cafe is decorated with orchids and a lot of Hello Kitties (duh) – it makes you feel like being in an indoor garden. Elegant but not too much.

photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b502b22Wanted to sit on the swing but wouldn’t it be inconvenient to eat that way? Haha.

photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b512b43You’re the Berry Best Tea – $6.50
The name of the tea sounds cute yea haha. The tea was served in a cute teapot with a piece of Kitty-shaped butter cookie.

photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b512b58photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b522b13Leaning Tower of Kitty – $24.90
This was my friend’s order which I didn’t try as I was too engrossed with my cake haha. Joking, I was too full from the airplane food I had beforehand. It was Japanese bread with smoked salmon, cheese and arugula, topped with mustard mayo. Anyway, I like how they presented the salad in a glass vase.

photo2b2-23-17252c2b162b292b31photo2b2-28-17252c2b192b502b36Pink Velvet Cake – $8.90
I’m not a fan of pink color but I acknowledge this cake looks so cute, especially with that mini Kitty head on top. Unfortunately, this cake didn’t taste as good as it looked. It tasted just like normal sponge cake with buttercream, couldn’t find anything special about it except the sweet pinkish color.

Overall, I gotta say this Hello Kitty Cafe is something you could enjoy as long as you don’t expect too much from the food. If you are bored of waiting for your flight, you can drop by and relax here, as it conveniently opens for 24 hours.

Churro101 츄러스, Singapore

Churro101 츄러스, Singapore

One day after school, my friend and I went to Bugis+ to walk around. We spotted an Instagenic spot on its rooftop. They had flowery gate, swing, and even Cinderella-style carriage! *launching my phone camera*

Went to Uniqlo afterwards since my friend wanted to look for a blazer. She didn’t get anything but we ended up taking mirror selfies there haha.

We continued roaming around Bugis+ until we saw a churro shop with an interesting tagline, ‘better than a boyfriend’. I became so eager to try it as I was curious of how good their churro could be haha. The shop is called Churro101 – it is a South Korean churros brand that had just opened its first Singapore outlet at Bugis+ (by the time this post is written, the second outlet has opened at 313@Somerset). I really like churro, but unfortunately there is a lack of churro shop in Singapore (my favorite local churro shop, Churrosity, has ceased operation already).

blogger-image-1706506184blogger-image-1172881669
Ice Cream & Churro Set – $5.90
Churro plus ice cream is no doubt a hot-n-cold indulgence, so I opted for this combo. As for the churro itself, I chose the one with cinnamon coating. Frankly speaking, Churro101’s churro is probably one of the best churros I have ever tasted. The churro was quite long in size, probably around 20cm plus? The churro was crispy outside and fluffy inside, tasted so heavenly when eaten hot. The ice cream was just normal though – typical vanilla soft-serve which was no better than Mac’s.

I like the concept of open kitchen at Churro101 – it allows us to witness how the churro is made and decorated. The churro is fried upon order, so rest assure that you will not get the one that has been left cold. Anyway, I must admit it is still better to have a boyfriend rather than churro, but maybe churro can keep you joyful when your boyfriend is not around haha.
