Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie, Bali

Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie, Bali

Have I mentioned before that I’m the type of person who eats dessert for lunch? I know it sounds weird but I obviously don’t mind just eating cakes instead of heavy meal. So this afternoon I visited Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie (the name reminds me of TWG Tea Salon) in Kerobokan area. The place was rather empty with only one group of ang mohs having brunch. After I had seated, a staff handed me a menu book and informed me that hot meals and some beverage menus were not available due to the blackout (yes they’re having power failure that time, no wonder it felt so hot as the place was supposed to be aircon-ed)!. That being said, I could only order their cakes and cold beverages like iced teas and mojitos. Oh well, I was disappointed but it wouldn’t be nice to leave – I thought it would be offensive to them lol.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b052b06Anyway, the place still looks pretty despite the blackout (luckily I came on the daytime, otherwise I would not be able to appreciate the beautiful interior in the dark right?). I sat right next to the window – enough to make me feel like staying in an old English house in the countryside haha. I adore the Parisian-style decor with turquoise pastel color – it looks so chic and enchanting.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b47The outdoor area looks narrow but Instagrammable

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b122b28Ice Tea – IDR20,000
I wanted to have a cup of hot cappuccino or latte to go with the cakes but since hot drinks were not available, I got myself a glass of iced tea instead. The drink was forgettable but the presentation looked chio haha.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b35photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b142b10Nutella Croissant – IDR18,000
From the bread selection, my pick went to this Nutella croissant. The croissant itself has several variants like almond, Nutella, green tea and salted egg yolk. I wanted to have the salted egg one, but for the second time I was made disappointed for not being able to order it as they would need a microwave to re-heat the croissant. Okay fine. Even though it was not served warm, the croissant was still enjoyable. Besides having flaky skin, the texture was soft and slightly chewy. The Nutella filling was generous as well albeit not flowy as I thought it would be.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b112b56Green Tea Eclair – IDR32,000
Besides Nutella croissant, I got myself a piece of green tea eclair too because why didn't I indulge myself with the best of both worlds (I'm talking about Nutella and green tea here)? The choux was a tad dry for my liking. The green tea filling was clotted when I cut the choux but nevertheless it was delicious and it had a delightful green tea scent.

photo2b11-16-16252c2b112b082b50It was a good tai tai time spent at Angelita, although it would be much better if there wasn't any blackout haha. It was so awkward without any background music – the place was so quiet that even the staffs talked to each other whispering lol). The desserts were all good, if only they were not that pricey. I felt heavy-hearted paying 15% tax and service charge for two small cakes and a glass of iced tea *sobs*. But overall, I would recommend this place to visit when you are in Bali. Indulge in the princessy atmosphere and get your camera ready all the time as every corner is worth an Instagram post. FYI, they also have afternoon tea package on weekends (yup, it's available on weekends only – what’s the point of calling themselves a tea salon then haha).

Lantern, Bali

Lantern, Bali

Lantern is an Southeast Asian-inspired eatery located on Jl. Petitenget. It stays true to the process of making every dish from scratch and by hand using the freshest ingredients. When I came here for early lunch at 11am, this place was empty and there was only one in-charge staff.

photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b402b291photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b432b421The place looks cheerfully bright in white and yellow colors during the daylight. Although it has no aircon, the fans were cooling enough to me.

photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b412b081photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b412b381Thai Iced Tea – IDR30,000
The Thai iced tea came in layers, which means I need to stir it up before drinking. The drink was nice and I could taste the fragrant tea aroma. However, I don’t think the serving size justifies the price enough.

photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b492b391photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b492b201photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b502b111Holy Basil & Chicken – IDR65,000
Among all kinds of food – from Singaporean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai to Malaysian food – my pick went to Thai food. The portion was enormous! The minced chicken was given in an abundant amount and it was well-seasoned. The fried egg was the highlight of this dish – the saltiness level was just right. And the most important part, this dish wasn’t spicy unlike other versions of basil chicken that I had tried.

photo2b2-4-17252c2b102b492b531Bluntly speaking, the service had a huge room for improvement. I was a service staff intern in a 5* resort that puts hospitality above everything, so I see customer service as the most crucial element of an F&B business and I get irritated easily with places that implement service charge yet they can’t afford to deliver good service! Since the very first time I stepped inside Lantern, I saw no sign of welcoming. The staff pretended not to see me (I don’t know if she did it purposely or not) and acted if she’s busy with her paperwork until I approached her, asking sarcastically whether the restaurant had opened yet.

Well, that’s not the end. After my food had come, I politely asked her to help me take a picture. She just nodded her head, took 2 pictures of me, and went away. Yes, she went away without saying any word! Whereas, in some other cafes the staffs would gladly help me take pics and they would ask me to check the pics they took whether I was okay with them or I wanted a retake. They would wait until I finished checking, thanked them or asked for a retake and informed them on how to adjust the brightness, focus, and so forth until it fitted my desired result. I checked the pictures and they didn’t look nice. Too much exposure and not focused enough. You can see in my pic above that my face was only half bright – I’ve done my best to edit it. I was damn pissed off, what disappointed me more was the fact that I was the only patron that time – come on, are you that busy mbak?! I would understand if your place was crowded, but it’s not! If you’re in a hurry to finish your paperwork, that’s your own fault, why don’t you finish it before the restaurant’s opening time?! After I finished eating, the staff casually asked me ‘have you done?’. I just nodded and let her clear up my plate. Actually I wanted to ask for the wi-fi password from the very beginning but I decided to refrain myself from doing so upon receiving her frigid treatment. Lazy already.

Overall, I like the food and ambiance here, but my only concern is their service. PLEASE improve it, because in F&B business, good food means nothing without good customer service.

Panama Kitchen & Pool, Bali

Panama Kitchen & Pool, Bali

Introducing the new cool kid in Canggu: Panama Kitchen & Pool! From the outside, this place looked just like another takeaway drink stall but once I stepped in, the feeling was out of this world. In an instant, I was transported to Santorini. When my friend and I arrived at the place, a staff gladly welcomed us and she informed us that there was a minimum transaction of IDR70,000 per head, and with this amount we were allowed to enjoy the pool facility. Anyway, isn’t it amazing that we could visit three cities at once? The place is called Panama, it’s located in Bali and it looks like Santorini haha.

White walls, blue pool that makes you want to splash yourself in, lazy chairs by the poolside… Ah, I couldn’t afford (yet) to go to Santorini but for now let me pretend I was there lol.

Photo 1-12-17, 12 22 53.jpgIced Coffee with Milk – IDR30,000
It’s the only type of iced coffee available and it disappointed me as I wanted to have my regular iced mocha! It tasted awful and diluted. See that layer of water on top? Well, they are supposed to use espresso ice cubes instead of normal ones to prevent the ice cubes from diluting the drink.

Photo 1-12-17, 12 22 42Lemon Squash – IDR40,000
My friend said it was refreshing but a little bit too sour for her liking.

Photo 1-12-17, 12 21 54Photo 1-12-17, 12 21 44Pulled-Pork Benedict – IDR55,000
Panama’s breakfast menu is available from 7am to 1pm. For her late breakfast, my friend had this eggs benedict. Instead of using baked ham or bacon, Panama’s rendition substitutes those two with pulled pork. The egg is served with side salad consisting of pineapple, watercress, red radish and Al Pastor dressing. Eggs ben could be hit and miss, but there was a weird sourish taste from the pork, so it might not be my hit. Nonetheless, it was an okay dish.

Photo 1-12-17, 12 22 16Photo 1-12-17, 12 22 32Early Net Catch – IDR65,000
There is nothing more satisfying than having a full-plate breakfast; however, I somehow regretted ordering this. The scrambled eggs and bacon were dry, the toasted bread was stone-hard, and the sausages were too salty. The only saving graces were perhaps the nicely-sauteed mushrooms and the sweet corn on the cob.

Photo 1-13-17, 03 02 51Sorry I couldn’t hold back my ‘sian’ face haha

IMG_2813Photo 1-12-17, 13 08 04IMG_2735I super love every corner in Panama, they seemed to call me to Instagram them! As long as you don’t set your expectation too high on the food and just come to have fun, I guarantee you’re gonna have a splendid time here. Kudos to the staffs too, they were all friendly (in fact I enjoyed chatting with them) and always ready to help you with your photo-takings.

The Lawn, Bali

The Lawn, Bali

The Lawn is a cool hang out place in Canggu with picnic-on-the-grass concept. The grass field has an unobstructed view of the beach, making it a great spot to catch the sunset. While relaxing, you can enjoy some food and drink. On our off-day, I dragged my friend here as I wanted to pose with The Lawn’s Insta-famous swing; however, to my disappointment, the swing was under renovation (or it had been taken out?).

Photo 1-12-17, 15 34 15.jpgThe green grass seemed like calling me to just sit on it and relax all day

Photo 1-12-17, 15 40 41Photo 1-12-17, 15 40 45They also have semi-indoor and rooftop areas – how cool is that?

Photo 1-12-17, 14 24 18Complimentary lemon-infused water was served to us right after we were seated. To be honest I didn’t like the infused water, somemore it wasn’t served cold ugh. Since it was free stuff, I couldn’t really complain.

Photo 1-12-17, 14 18 29Photo 1-12-17, 14 18 40Peanut Butter Banana – IDR40,000
Forget about coffee! Since we were chilling by the beach, I thought it was the norm to order something fruity. I got myself PBB smoothie, which was a mix of banana, peanut butter, dates and vanilla ice cream. It’s damn good, I swear. I supposed they used almond mylk or some other dairy-free ingredient as it tasted distinctive. Not forgetting the fact that it’s healthy and protein-packed as well.

Photo 1-12-17, 14 19 47Maca Maca – IDR60,000
My friend ordered Maca Maca, which was made of blueberries, maca powder, almond milk, dates and honey. FYI, maca powder is made of maca root (some kind of Peruvian ginseng), and it’s gaining popularity as superfood and supplement. The blueberry flavor was dominant in this drink. My friend said it tasted weird at first but eventually turned nice after a few sips lol.

Photo 1-12-17, 14 20 17
My #lifegoal is actually to look naturally happy in every picture haha

The food and drink here are expensive but I guess it’s okay to indulge and enjoy life once in a while haha. I didn’t stay here until sunset, but I would obviously like to give this place another visit to catch the sunset. Do come early to chope the prime spot for sunset-watching!

잊어버리지마 (Don’t Forget)

잊어버리지마 (Don’t Forget)

You and I, even if we become strangers some day
Even if we become two people who can’t ever come together again
Don’t forget me, don’t lose me
Even if you’re holding someone else’s hand
Even if you’re somewhere I can’t ever reach you
Don’t forget me, don’t lose me

It’s so warm when our cheeks are touching
When you softly hold my cold hands
My heart was tired from the cold world
But you embraced it with your warmth
Your face that fills my eyes
Your face that’s fast asleep in my arms
I wish time would stop right now
Never let go of these hands

We’re looking at each other right now
I hope this moment lasts forever
I’m worried that time would get jealous of us
Don’t ever change, always by my side
Forever together, my love

I hope you’ll remember me some day
I hope you’ll look back at least once
Please don’t let go
Keep looking at us
Oh my love, even after time passes
You and I, even if we become strangers some day
Don’t forget me
Don’t forget this song

Calibre Coffee Roasters, Surabaya

Calibre Coffee Roasters, Surabaya

Today I drove my mom to a coffee shop near my house called Calibre Coffee Roasters (actually it’s not so near la, given the fact that I still needed to drive haha). Frankly speaking, this was one of those rare occasions that I went to a cafe with my mom. Normally, I would go with my close friends or cousins since we’re already clicked – thus, we could spend a few hours together without looking awkward.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset
This cafe is strategically located in the heart of Surabaya and majority of its patrons are youngsters. There are indoor and outdoor areas – outdoor area is suitable for smokers. Calibre occupies the space of a colonial-style house, whereby the front part has been converted into a hipster-looking cafe.

These hanging lightbulbs add more hipster feeling to the cafe.

When I saw some seats upon the windowsill that had a view to the main road, I immediately ‘chope’ them before proceeding to the counter for ordering process. Taking a glance at their menu board, there are not many options of heavy meal, but the usual cafe fares like sandwiches, salad, French toast, pasta, and cakes on display are available.

calibreShaken Iced Tea – IDR20,000
Not just ordinary iced tea, it was shaken iced tea (hence the frothy surface). My mom didn’t expect it to be that plain, she thought that some sugar had been added beforehand haha.

Caffe Latte – IDR30,000
A trip to a hipster coffee shop is not complete without getting a dose of caffeine to sip. The latte art looks kinda vague. I took my first sip and it was pleasant. It carried a good ratio between acidity and milkiness. However, my mom complained that it’s too acidic for her liking, as she had been accustomed to drinking instant milk coffee lol. Therefore, when a cup of freshly-roasted coffee was given to her, she was surprised of its acidity. I’m no coffee connoisseur, but I think it is safe to say that my latte was enjoyable.

Spicy Beef Bacon Penne in Tomato Cream Sauce – IDR55,000
I shared this pasta with mom since we were both too full to get each of us a main course. I was underestimating their food – I initially thought that cafe food would be mediocre. But when they said it’s spicy, they really meant it. The spiciness was no joke for a non-spicy eater like me, but mom said it tasted fine.

Choco Oreo Mille Crepes – IDR35,000
This mille crepe was supplied by Lareia, I suppose? It had super soft texture, chocolatey taste and sweet Oreo finish. Definitely no regret paying IDR35,000 for this!

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset
Was it awkward to actually spend time in a coffee shop with mom? Not really, she could be a pretty good photographer and we could chat about random stuffs while consuming the food haha. Sitting next to the big window glass is really helpful to add natural lighting to my photos. Furthermore, it’s an enjoyment for me to see what’s happening on the road outside and do people-watching. The atmosphere is homey and laid-back with some blues and jazz tunes playing in the background. The service was okay, although I felt that the counter staffs could deliver more eye contact to customers. Cafe hoppers, do give this place a try!

Djati Lounge, Malang

Djati Lounge, Malang

Looking for a relaxing place to escape from the lively city scene? Make your way to the city of Malang and unwind yourself at Djati Lounge. Djati Lounge is situated in The Araya, an upscale housing estate in Malang. The exact location is quite far from Araya’s main gate (where Plaza Araya is located) and there doesn’t seem to be adequate signboard, so you may need to arm yourself with GPS or Google Maps haha.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 16 58
The dining area here is pretty big. There are indoor and semi-outdoor areas on both first and second floors. My favorite part is the semi-outdoor area on the first floor – the sofas are just too comfy that I want to chill there all day haha.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 09 26Iced Strawberry Mint Tea – IDR30,000
Not sure if they freshly brewed the tea, but this drink was pleasant. The mint gave a cooling sensation and there was sourish flavor from the strawberry too.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 09 14Taro ‘Tahwa’ – IDR35,000
The taro frappe supposedly came with silky beancurd, but we were informed that the beancurd was out of stock so they changed it to grass jelly. The drink was milky and the taro taste was distinctive.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 12 26Choco Marshmallow – IDR35,000
It was just the usual iced chocolate with two marshmallows on top. The chocolate flavor was velvety and not too bitter, I liked it.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 13 40Cheese Fritter – IDR35,000
It was a good snack to munch. The fritters were stuffed with piping hot cheese that melted as I tore it in two.

Photo 3-26-17, 14 13 44Crispy Mushroom – IDR25,000
It was okay, but it would be better if the fried mushroom was accompanied with mayonnaise instead of ‘petis’, although it might be purposely done to bring out a true Indonesian taste. The batter was a bit too thick for me though.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 16 42Sitting Scallop  IDR60,000
The scallop sits on a small piece of bread, finished with BBQ sauce garnish. I don’t like scallop so I cannot comment on this haha. Anyway, thumbs up for the good-looking presentation.

Photo 6-24-16, 15 59 32
Cheese Sticks – IDR30,000
The concept of this dish is similar to churros, with puff pastry sticks substituting the doughnuts. Coming with chocolate dipping sauce, it turned out pedestrian to me.

Overall, I had a pleasant time with my family here – the food, service, and atmosphere were all good. Once you are seated here, you wouldn’t want to leave. The price range is a bit on the steep side for Malang standard, but trust me, it’s worth every Rupiah. The place is family-friendly – they have a playroom to keep your kids occupied. Additionally, if you come from outside Malang, there is Djoglo Luxury Bungalow available for rent, which is just beside Djati Lounge.
